Among the most significant representatives of contemporary narrative documentary, Tizza Covi (Italy) and Rainer Frimmel (Austria) will be the filmmakers to whom the Festival will dedicate the retrospective of the 61st edition.
After their debut with BABOOSKA (2006, winner of the Italian Competition at the Festival dei Popoli), they won international critical acclaim with LA PIVELLINA (2009), selected at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes and then winner of the Best Film Award at the Mostra del Cinema di Pesaro (as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film).
Their profoundly original work investigates the dimension of the “Cinema of the Real” and freely indulges in it, with a human gaze towards the protagonists and the ability to tell their marginal lives in an empathetic and engaging way.
After THE SHINE OF DAY (2012) and MISTER UNIVERSO (2016), their latest film NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND (2020) is set in the context of the Viennese underworld of the 1960s where, in a controversial trial, singer Kurt Girk and his legendary friend Alois have to pay for their proximity to the illegal card game “Stoss” with long prison sentences. A love letter to a Vienna of the past that is also a social portrait of post-war Austria.
The retrospective, curated by Daniela Persico, is organized in collaboration with the Austrian Film Commission and the Austrian Forum in Rome.
