The siege of Saint Petersburg is described up close as a tremendous experience of the tragic absurdity of war. The cameramen of that time, scattered in the streets, on the bridges, and in the city’s courtyards captured the daily events of an overwhelming daily routine in concrete, crystalline images. Sixty years later, Sergei Loznitsa recreated the emotion of that distant time by inventing for those images their ‘natural’ sounds, weaving the latter into a new form at the crossroads of storytelling and theoretical production.
