ITALIAN DOC SCREENINGS IN FLORENCE
Italy’s biggest event in the documentary scene, one of the most important in Europe.
The best opportunity to talk about the future of documentary film-making, find co-production partners, sell and buy films, discuss projects and meet decision makers.
The event aims to encourage meetings and exchanges between authors, producers, distributors and representatives from international broadcasters, distributors, festivals and international organizations.
The event is made possible thanks to the agreement between Doc/it, the Ministry for Economic Development and ICE – the Italian Trade Commission – that support policies in favour of internationalization and promotion of ‘made in Italy’ all over the world.

Rassegna di documentari organizzata da Documentaristi Anonimi - Associazione Documentaristi Toscani - presso il Parco dell'Anconella - Arena Teatro Blu - Via Villamagna, 39 - Firenze
La manifestazione propone una scelta di film dei registi dell’associazione, ma soprattutto sarà un luogo di incontro e discussione aperta, tra i registi, con il pubblico.
Sarà un’occasione per condividere, nelle conversazioni fra autori e pubblico, l’esperienza del cinema del reale.
La manifestazione è una prima tappa del lavoro di diffusione e divulgazione del cinema documentario, nelle sue diversità e ricchezze, presso un pubblico che spesso non ha modo di vederlo e quando ne ha l’occasione scopre quanto il documentario sia cinema…
L'obiettivo è quello di portare il documentario nelle Piazze , proporsi come interlocutori e supportare chiunque voglia organizzare ‘serate DOC’ con la presenza degli autori su temi spesso differenti.
Cornice dell'evento sarà il Parco dell'Anconella, situato nel Quartiere 3 di Firenze e gentilmente concesso dall'Associazione Culturale Cambiamusica!-Firenze.
Questo format di proiezione-presenza sarà riproposto in altri spazi della città e della Regione sia durante l'estate, che nella prossima stagione.
Ingresso gratuito. Uscita Firenze Sud per chi viene in autostrada. Possibilità di ristorante per cene o aperitivi.

LE QUATTRO VOLTE di Michelangelo Frammartino
Il 1° Luglio il regista Michelangelo Frammartino presenterà alle 21.00 al pubblico di Odeon Firenze il suo ultimo film, vincitore dell’Europa Cinema Label 2010. La serata è organizzata in collaborazione con il FESTIVAL DEI POPOLI. Frammartino farà parte della Giuria Internazionale del 51° Festival dei Popoli.

Un paese calabrese abbarbicato su alte colline da cui si scorge il mar Ionio in lontananza, un posto dove il tempo sembra essersi fermato, dove le pietre hanno il potere di cambiare gli eventi e le capre si soffermano a contemplare il cielo.
Una visione poetica sui cicli della vita e della natura, sulle tradizioni dimenticate di un luogo senza tempo. Un film di fantascienza senza effetti speciali, che accompagna lo spettatore in un mondo sconosciuto e magico, alla scoperta del segreto di quattro vite misteriosamente intrecciate l’una nell’altra.

CLOSING, by Alessandro Rossetto

The film describes the closing-down of Flavia’s old hairdresser salon in the southern outskirts of the city. Along with the story of the closing down, the film describes the little/big universe of the neighbourhood that surrounds the salon and about Flavia, who leaves her job after forty-five years. A small travelling circus, a female soccer team: the last days in the life of Flavia’s salon are intertwined with the surrounding neighbourhood, blending together thanks to the delicate narration of CLOSING.

The film explores the extreme experience of life of four inmates sentenced to life imprisonment on the island Prison of Porto Azzuro (Italy). Shot during Christmas and the first weeks of 1994, the documentary focuses on the everyday reality and the interior lives of people caught between a timeless existence and the routine of a total institution.

On September 14th, 1963, Mary Ann Fischer brought five magnificent twins into the world. The happy news immediately breaches the quiet borders of Aberdeen, South Dakota, and attracts the attention of the media, who transform the event into a national story. The family’s request for privacy is ignored by the community’s major exponents, who want to financially exploit this new tourist attraction. The film is still today a prime example of an America that is dogged by the deleterious effects of media coverage.

Bibione, the Adriatic Sea, 100 kilometres north of Venice. A black-and-white journey between characters and situations, in full unprecedented emersion. Again astraddle harsh realities and real absurdities, the movie camera seems to move in a world of its own that may be anywhere or nowhere, recording a memory that is being created during the summers that follow one another like interchangeable wedges that are ideally never-ending. Time and space blend together, becoming both bonding agent and setting. The passing of time is blocked for one day, the flow of summer allows itself to be grasped and reveals a wise and disquieting humanity that is both comical and bitter at the same time.

BELOW SEA LEVEL, by Gianfranco Rosi (Italy/USA, 2008, 115')
The American Premiere of the Italian director's latest work: BELOW SEA LEVEL, the intimate portrait of a commune of outcasts living in the middle of the desert about 200 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The multi-awarded film received among the others the Venice Horizons Documentary Prize.
The film is presented in the director's presence.
A handful of misfits and outcasts create a makeshift community amidst the wreckage of the California desert. "Slab City" is on first sight little more than a collection of junked cars, corrugated steel sheds and handmade huts in an arid wasteland 190 miles from downtown Los Angeles, but the abandoned Marine Corps training camp is home to a small band of youthful bohemians, self-styled outsiders and seasonal drifters who have chosen to live outside of civilization with no laws, conventional authority, electricity or running water. The Festival dei Popoli in New York
The third edition of the New York Documentary Film Festival – Festival dei Popoli will be held at Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue at 2nd Street, New York, NY 10003) from May 26 to May 30, 2010.
OPENING NIGHT
The festival will open on May 26 with a tribute to the award-winning Italian filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi with the US-Premiere of BELOW SEA LEVEL.
The film is an intimate portrait of a commune of outcasts living in the middle of the desert about 200 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The multi-awarded documentary received, among the others, the Orizzonti Award at the Venice Film Festival 2008.
The film is presented in the presence of the director.
FESTIVAL PROGRAM
The five-days event will features four programs of auteur documentaries, with a total of eighteen films depicting reality and history as filtered through the deeply personal aesthetics of very different directors.

"HUMAN TERRAIN": Official Selection - HOT DOCS FILM FESTIVAL
HUMAN TERRAIN, directed by James Der Derian, David Udris and Michael Udris - Winner of the Audience Award at the 50th Festival dei Popoli - has been included in the Official Selection 2010 at Hot Docs Film Festival (Toronto, April 29 - May 9, 2010).
HUMAN TERRAIN was also screened at CHP:DOX Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival and will be presented at the Wisconsin Film Festival.

The Festival dei Popoli in Beijing
From April 20 to April 26, 2010 will be held in Beijing the first edition of the IIF - INTERNATIONAL IMAGE FORUM (China Italian International Image Documentary Forum), organized by Festival dei Popoli and Beijing Kong Hou Miao Yin Culture Co. with the collaboration of Italian Cultural Institute of Italian Embassy, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art and Broadway Cinematheque MOMA.
The programme includes three sections:
1) ITALIAN CHRONICLES
A selection of 16 Italian documentaries from 2000 to 2009 to describe contemporary Italy: its people, its history, its culture, its traditions and arts. All films are provided by the Festival dei Popoli Film Archives.

1. Read or download the Regulations Form.
2. Create your FDP USER ACCOUNT
If you made an online registration for the past editions of the festival, you already have got an user account on this website.
If you miss your password, please activate the password recovery procedure.
3. With your FDP USER ACCOUNT panel you can create film registrations and modify them.
4. You should print, sign and send us the e-mail received when the on-line submission is completed.
5. You can find the list of all materials required for pre-selection purposes on the Regulations Form.

"To shoot an elephant", film documentario di Alberto Arce e Mohammad Rujailah, vincitore del premio per la Migliore Regia al 50° Festival dei Popoli, è un resoconto realizzato da testimoni oculari presenti nella Striscia di Gaza durante i bombardamenti effettuati dall'esercito israeliano lo scorso dicembre, nel corso dell'Operazione "Piombo fuso": 21 giorni a sparare sull'elefante.
Incalzante, sporco, da far perdere il sonno, immagini che fanno rabbrividire raccolte dagli unici stranieri che hanno deciso di rimanere -e ci sono riusciti- all'interno delle ambulanze nella striscia di Gaza, con i civili palestinesi.
Il film -premiato lo scorso novembre al Festival dei Popoli di Firenze- sta organizzando il 18 gennaio 2010 un “global screening day” in tutto il mondo, in occasione dell’anniversario dei bombardamenti israeliani a Gaza. RETROSPETTIVA DEDICATA A NICOLAS PHILIBERT
dal 7 al 29 Novembre la Bibliothèque du Centre Pompidou dedica una retrospettiva completa a Nicolas Philibert, cui è stata anche offerta la possibilità di curare una selezione dei suoi film preferiti. La retrospettiva comprende anche l'ultimo film, NENETTE, presentato in Concorso Lungometraggi al 50° Festival dei Popoli.

20mila presenze, quasi il doppio dello scorso anno, 400 accreditati tra registi (50), produttori (20), studenti italiani e stranieri (230), operatori culturali (50), direttori di festival (3), registi ospiti (50) e inoltre 50 giornalisti accreditati. Sono i dati che registra la 50a edizione del Festival dei Popoli, che si è conclusa ieri al Cinema Odeon di Firenze - nell’ambito dei “50 giorni di cinema internazionale” rassegna cinematografica coordinata da Mediateca Regionale Toscana Film Commission – con le premiazioni.
“La 50a edizione – ha dichiarato Giorgio Bonsanti, presidente della Festival dei Popoli – ha avuto luogo in un momento in cui il documentario si inserisce nella comunicazione globale non solo come scelta artistica e cinematografica ma come mezzo d’informazione indispensabile. I numerosi spettatori hanno dimostrano che l’offerta culturale del Festival ha intercettato l’esigenza del pubblico (sin dai più giovani) di vedere sia i documentari che hanno raccontato la storia del Festival (la sezione omaggio ai 50 anni del Festival) e sia quelli che hanno mostratola più stringente attualità”.

La musica nera chiude la 50a edizione del Festival dei Popoli con la proiezione dell’anteprima italiana di SOUNDTRACK FOR A REVOLUTION for a revolution di Bill Guttertag e Dan Sturman (ore 22.00, Cinema Odeon) sulla storia del movimento di rivendicazione dei diritti civili in America attraverso le canzoni cantate nelle manifestazioni fatte di libertà, speranze, giustizia e cariche d’energia (il documentario chiude con il discorso d’insediamento di Obama). La proiezione sarà preceduta da PULL MY DAISY di Robert Frank e Alfred Lesile sulla beat generation e del new american cinema, ambientato in un appartamento newyorkese dove si ritrova un gruppo di poeti, musicisti ed artisti.
Alle 21 la cerimonia di premiazione dei film vincitori della 50esima edizione al Cinema Odeon. La giuria internazionale, composta da Marjane Satrapi, Karim Aïnouz, Christian Baute, Leonardo di Costanzo e Tanja Meding attribuirà il Premio Miglior Documentario (euro 10.000), Premio alla Regia (euro 5.000), la targa “Gian Paolo Paoli” al Miglior Film Etno-antropologico e il Premio per la Distribuzione in collaborazione con la Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo. Thomas Heise a Firenze racconta la Germania invisibile
Il regista Thomas Heise arriva a Firenze per la 50esima edizione del Festival dei Popoli, domani, giovedì 5 novembre, presso lo Spazio Uno alle ore 18.30. Il Festival ha omaggiato il regista con una retrospettiva completa, inedita in Italia. Il regista ha raccontato la Germania dell’Est da dissidente. Ha raccontato il muro visto da quella parte dove il regime era totalizzante. “Ho sempre lavorato nella terra del nemico”. Così Heise ha detto in occasione del suo arrivo a Firenze. Il regista è stato per anni oggetto di violenta censura da parte degli organismi cinematografici ufficiali: solo negli ultimi anni è stato possibile vedere i suoi primi lavori e ricostituirli su altri formati dopo che i negativi originali erano stati distrutti. L’omaggio al regista tedesco si inserisce nelle più ampie manifestazioni organizzate dalla Regione Toscana in occasione del ventennale della caduta del muro di Berlino.
Allo Spazio Uno, per la quinta giornata del Festival, si parte alle 10 con l’omaggio al regista tedesco con due anteprime nazionali: MEIN BRUDER e EINSENZEIT. A tu per tu con i Bassidji dell’Iran
LLa macchina da presa della quarta giornata del Festival dei Popoli (oggi, mercoledì 4 novembre) si spinge in Iran. Alle 18.30 al cinema Odeon si terrà l’anteprima italiana di BASSIDJI di Mehran Tamadon, il regista iraniano emigrato in Francia che incontra “i difensori della causa” della Repubblica islamica iraniana, il popolo dei Bassidji, gli “squadristi” del regime protagonisti delle ultime repressioni nelle piazze di Teheran. Il documentario è una sorta di confronto tra il regista e i supporter più estremisti della repubblica islamica con cui instaura un dialogo profondo e sincero. “Perché persone che dicono di agire per conto di Dio amano così poco gli uomini?”. Questo è uno degli interrogativi che viene fuori dal documentario che, spiega il regista, “non sarà proiettato in Iran, almeno non ufficialmente”.
La prima serata parte con altre due anteprime. A Cecilia Mangini il premio Presidente della Repubblica / Spazio Uno: omaggio ad Alvaro Bizzarri, documentarista operaio di Pistoia
Oggi, martedì 3 novembre, per la terza giornata del Festival dei Popoli, al Cinema Odeon verrà consegnata la Medaglia del Presidente della Repubblica alla regista Cecilia Mangini in occasione della consegna del Premio Solinas a Firenze “per aver trasmesso alle generazioni future, attraverso la sua attività di cineasta documentarista, alcune delle più belle immagini dell'Italia degli anni ‘50 e ‘60”.
Alle 21.15 la premiazione dei vincitori del Premio Solinas Documentario per il Cinema 2009, il primo riconoscimento in Italia per la scrittura di documentari di creazione destinati alla sala cinematografica.

‘Les Arbitres’, gli arbitri di calcio minuto per minuto
Oggi Lunedì 2 novembre alle 21 al Cinema Odeon verrà proiettato LES ARBITRES, il documentario del regista belga Yves Hinant sugli arbitri di calcio. Il documentario, girato durante i Campionati Europei del 2008 in Austria e Svizzera e presentato all’ultimo festival di Locarno, è un vero e proprio reportage che segue gli arbitri minuto per minuto: dalla preparazione atletica all’ingresso in campo, dai momenti cruciali della partita fino agli spogliatoi.
Il documentario - registrando tutte le conversazioni tra arbitro, guardalinee e giocatori – proietta lo spettatore direttamente sul campo di gioco, svelando le innumerevoli parole, urla e avvertimenti che il direttore di gara compie durante il match. Il film cerca di sviscerare non solo il lato sportivo e le controversie provocate degli arbitri, ma sopratutto il loro vero e proprio lato umano. Il documentario, tra le altre cose, ci fa ascoltare le parole scambiate tra arbitro, guardalinee e quarto uomo durante il corso della partita. I Popoli in musica con Woodstock
Il Festival internazionale del documentario inaugura la 50a edizione: le speranze dei giovani imprenditori italiani, la musica di Woodstock a quarant’anni dal festival, la Tunisia mai vista e la Germania divisa. Sono alcune delle tematiche che verranno raccontate dalla cinepresa della 50a edizione del Festival dei Popoli che inizia domani, 1 novembre, presso i cinema Odeon e Spazio Uno.
SERATA DI APERTURA
Al Cinema ODEON, in prima serata l’omaggio ai 50 anni del Festival con la proiezione d’archivio de "I dimenticati" di Vittorio De Seta (h 21.30) sulla difficile vita di un piccolo paese calabrese nel 1959, tra la durezza della quotidianità e l’attesa di un’antichissima festa tradizionale. L’inaugurazione del Festival avverrà, a seguire (h 22.15), con la proiezione dell’anteprima nazionale di "Woodstock. Now and Then", documentario diretto da Barbara Kopple sull’evento musicale del 1969 che segnò una svolta epocale. Nella pellicola i “tre giorni di pace e musica” sono raccontati dai suoi protagonisti: Michael Lang, ideatore del Festival e Michael Wadleigh, regista del film-concerto. Aneddoti, testimonianze e riprese inedite ricostruiscono i retroscena del concerto più famoso della storia del rock.

La giornata iniziale è ricca di film: tre lungometraggi che partecipano al concorso, un documentario rispolverato dai nostri archivi, meravigliosa testimonianza nonché spaccato di una parte d’Italia che a noi pare così lontana nel tempo e per questo così affascinante, e, dulcis in fundo, una serata in cui ballerete sulle poltrone trascinati dalle note dei protagonisti di Woodstock! NON MANCATE!

Così Luciano Barisone, direttore del Festival dei Popoli – festival internazionale del film documentario – presenta la 50a edizione della vetrina di documentari più antica al mondo organizzata all’interno della "50 giorni di cinema internazionale a Firenze", la manifestazione dalla Mediateca Regionale Toscana Film Commission. “Il documentario è la forma di cinema – continua Barisone - che più di ogni altra riesce a captare la realtà in tutte le sue sfumature, quella che più è sinonimo di libertà di espressione. FILMMAKER
Thomas Heise is a German filmmaker who has, with great care and determination, documented the passing of Germany under the RDT to the collapse of the wall to the subsequent reunification. Born in 1955, the director was the victim of strict censure by official film boards for many years. Only in recent years has it been possible to see his early films and adapt them to other formats after the original negatives were destroyed. His most recent work, the multiple-award winning “Material” (first prize at FID Marseille 2009) is an extraordinary film that has attracted the attention of the biggest international festivals and those attached to them.

With a filmography that combines political analysis, autobiography, sociological studies, experimentation and environmental studies, Heise, a disciple of the dramaturge Heiner Muller, deals with a junction of crucial importance to re-introduce a cinema that speaks in the first person while projecting outward, tackling a present that is contradictory and complex. Le storie e la vita quotidiana dei musicisti coinvolti nel progetto MusicRekk si intrecciano tra Dakar e Somone, tra Brufut e M’bour: l’hip hop della capitale del Senegal incontra il reggae melodico di Ismael sulle coste del Gambia, gli Zykr sui tetti di Parcelle Assainié rincorrono i tamburi guineani del maestro Pakata. La musica vissuta quotidianamente, con energia, fatica e povertà di mezzi, racconta un’altra faccia dell’Africa: non quella della sofferenza e della compassione, ma quella della complessa spiritualità, dell’intreccio tra tradizione e modernità, dell’incontro tra diverse culture, del desiderio di comunicare con il resto del mondo attraverso il linguaggio universale della musica.
La proiezione fa parte del programma "Ujamaa per Radio Moto – Tutti insieme per Radio Moto", tre giorni dedicata all’Africa organizzata dall’Associazione “Il sale della terra”. Obiettivo della tre giorni:

2nd Festival dei Popoli - New York Documentary Film Festival
The second edition of the Festival dei Popoli - New York Documentary Film Festival – at the Anthology Film Archives is part of an ongoing movement by the Festival dei Popoli of Florence, Italy, to celebrate its 50th anniversary through the circulation of its rich collection of archival films abroad.
Founded in 1959 in Florence, the Festival dei Popoli is devoted to promoting and studying social documentary cinema. In fifty years, the collection has grown into an unparalleled treasure of documentary films covering the history of non-fiction filmmaking.
Legendary New York documentarist Albert Maysles, a regular guest of the Festival dei Popoli in Florence, will open the five-day event with a rare screening of his "Meet Marlon Brando" with the director in-person. Maysles draws an intimate and unusual portrait of Brando as himself during a lengthy, semi-voluntary session of press interviews set up to try to save his ill-fated film project "Morituri". The Festival dei Popoli is honored to pay tribute to Maysles’s unique vision with two more of his films in this year’s program, including his first film "Psychiatry in Russia".

The 50th Festival dei Popoli – International Documentary Film Festival– will take place in Florence from the 1st to the 7th of November 2009.
Submission of films for pre-selection is free. The submission procedure of one or more films may be run through the online registration on this website.
The film submission must be run no later than June 15th 2009 for films produced before April 30th 2009; no later than August 1st 2009 for films either produced after April 30th 2009 or still in production.
The Festival includes the following sections: Official Selection, tributes/retrospectives, seminars, panel discussions, special events.
THE OFFICIAL SELECTION
Documentaries of all lengths and nationalities completed after September 1st 2008 will be considered for selection. They must be an Italian Premiere at least. The selected films could be included in the following section:
LONG FEATURE DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION
Film length must be equal or superior than 40 minutes.
An international Jury composed of leading figures in cinema and in the art fields will assign the following awards:
- Best Documentary: € 10,000.00 (equally divided between the director and the production).
- Best Directing: € 5,000.00.
- Best Anthropological Film: “Gian Paolo Paoli” plate.

Luciano Barisone - Director of Festival dei Popoli – will participate as a member of the International Jury at the 31st edition of Cinéma du Réel – Internazional Documentary Cinema Festival – that will be held in Paris, at the Centre Pompidou and in other associated theatres, from the 6th to the 16th March, 2009.
CHINA IS STILL FAR AWAY
"Wa Laou fil sin" ("China is Still Far Away"), by Malek Bensmaïl, produced by Philippe Avril for Unlimited and by Hachemi Zertal for Cirta Film, long feature documentary presented in European Premiere at the 49th Festival dei Popoli, has been selected in the International Competition at the 31st Cinéma du Réel of Paris.

Le RED (Réseau d’Echange et d’Expérimentation pour la Diffusion du cinéma Documentaire) créé voici quatre ans regroupe à la fois de grands festivals internationaux, des salles de cinéma et des associations de salles, mais aussi des associations de diffusion dont les formes d’action et les histoires sont très différentes. Tous sont engagés dans la diffusion du cinéma documentaire et soucieux de défendre une approche créative du documentaire. Tous sont désireux de partager et de promouvoir la culture et la richesse du cinéma documentaire avec le public et l'ensemble de ceux qui contribuent à le faire exister.
Les membres du RED sont liés par une charte commune minimale (1) et par l’intérêt que chacun trouve à participer à un groupe de travail permettant à la fois de partager des expériences et des analyses, mais aussi de mettre en place des initiatives communes concrètes.

FESTIVAL DEI POPOLI
Le festival est né en 1959. C’est l’un des plus anciens festivals de cinéma en Europe, et il s’agit du premier festival qui fut spécialisé dans le documentaire. Ce festival international a lieu chaque année. Il est ponctué par des débats, des séminaires et des sections thématiques. Depuis quelques années il se préoccupe également de la formation des jeunes et de la diffusion du cinéma documentaire.
A propos de la formation, le Festival dei Popoli a organisé en 2002-2003, en partenariat avec le Cinéma en Lumière (Marseille) et avec le département d’arts visuels de l’université d’Edinburgh, un projet de formation et d’accompagnement "Le réel en chantier" qui a retenu un important succès. De 2004 à 2006, le Festival, en collaboration avec une agence de formation (CSCS de Pistoia), a organisé un cycle "Doc ut Des" animé par de grands spécialistes du cinéma documentaire. Ce cours incluait la réalisation d’une anthologie de courts-métrages.
Depuis de nombreuses années, le Festival a créé une section d’archives de 10 000 titres (films 35 et 16 mm, bétacam, béta numériques, Umatic, VHS et DVD), une importante collection de photos…

49th FESTIVAL DEI POPOLI – NANOOK’S HERITAGE
The act of documenting is as old as the hills. In the beginning the desire to know oneself and others produced oral reports and rock painting. This developed into written accounts and finally with the coming of mechanical reproduction of real life, billions of fixed and moving images. While the act of challenging man’s fallible memory sinks back into the recesses of time, the word “documentary” referring to a cinematographic account, is comparatively recent, dating back in fact to the early decades of the last century. As many people know, Grierson used it to define Flaherty’s Nanook of the North despite the fact that at that time he was already aware that such a definition was insufficient: “To define a film as a documentary is a clumsy description, but it continues to thrust itself upon us. The French, who were the first to use it, meant by it a travel film. (...) Starting off from this exotic vision the term has ended up including dramatic films like Moana or Zemlya (Earth). And at the same time it will embrace other genres, different in form and in aims (...)”.

The Festival dei Popoli In New York
The Festival dei Popoli’s first annual New York event was developed by two associations with similar cultural platforms: the venerable “Snug Harbor Cultural Center”, located in the Staten Island Botanical Garden, and the Fitzgerald Foundation of Florence, a new association founded on the longstanding friendship between the city of Florence and Anglo-Saxon culture. It is also made possible by the support of the Regione Toscana, the Mediateca Regionale Toscana Film Commission.
The three day event is part of an ongoing movement by the Festival dei Popoli to circulate its rich collection of archival footage abroad. Since 1959, the collection has grown into an unparalleled treasury of documentary films and the history of documentary filmmaking.
The Festival dei Popoli has specially put together a select program that highlights themes of cultural exchange intrinsic to the occasion. In part, the focus will be on New York as it has been depicted in the festival’s prizewinning films from the early years to today: from the preparation for a peace march in 1967, in David Loeb Weiss’ Profile of a Peace Parade, to the collection of Ellis Island testimonials in Recits d’Ellis Island (1978-1980) by Robert Bober and Georges Perec; to Ken Burns’ film…

Luciano Barisone è il nuovo direttore del Festival dei Popoli. Nato a Genova nel 1949, è giornalista, critico (Filmcritica, Cineforum, Duellanti, La rivista del Cinematografo), animatore di cineclub, e fondatore della rivista ’’Panoramiche’’, di cui è il direttore. Dal 1997 collabora con diversi festival internazionali di cinema. è curatore di monografie su Catherine Breillat, Robert Guédiguian, Clint Eastwood, Naomi Kawase, Nicolas Philibert. Nel 2002 crea l’Alba International Film Festival, di cui fino al 2007 è il direttore. è stato membro di Giurie internazionali a Cannes (Caméra d'or, 1997), Marsiglia (2000), Valladolid (2003), Buenos Aires (2004), Lisbona (2004), Belfort (2005), Pamplona (2008). Il neo direttore subentra a Mario Simondi, segretario generale del Festival dal lontano 1986 e collaboratore della rassegna sino dalle sue origini.
’’Accolgo con entusiasmo questo nuovo incarico perché il Festival è sempre stato per me un punto di riferimento. Quando, negli anni Settanta, mi sono incamminato sulla strada della critica cinematografica, ho avuto spesso la possibilità di seguirlo da vicino. Esso corrispondeva pienamente a quello che per me è uno dei modi privilegiati di conoscere il mondo e di riflettere sulla condizione umana. La rassegna è una annotazione per immagini in movimento di temi chiave dello sviluppo della società e del nostro mondo indagati attraverso video d'artista e documentari, questi ultimi provenienti dall'archivio del Festival dei Popoli.
Le trenta opere presentate, dal Messico all'India, dagli Stati Uniti alla Nigeria, da Israele alla Cina, dall'Italia al Congo alla Russia, raccontano storie e utopie, immaginano mondi, propongono ipotesi per la vita del futuro.
