SUF AWARD

SUF AWARD TO THE BEST SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILM

YAAR
by Simon Gillard (Belgium, 2014)

MOTIVATION Without a need for words, the mesmerizing visuals brilliantly capture the traditions, culture, labor, and craftsmanship in a community in Burkina Faso.

YAAR
by Simon Gillard (Belgium, 2014)
The gold-diggers of Burkina Faso in an elegy of colors, sounds and gestures of work. In a wonderful alternation of light and shadows, bodies without roughness move rhythmically and faintly to make time and space a visual as well as sensory experience. Yaar is the center of a mine, a separate universe shining by its own light.

SPECIAL MENTION

ESCORT
by Guido Hendrikx (The Netherlands, 2014)

MOTIVATION For bringing forward a new perspective on a sensitive and controversial issue, such as the deportation of immigrants in European countries, with a great sense of immediacy and urgency.

ESCORT
by Guido Hendrikx (The Netherlands, 2014)
In the Netherlands, it takes three weeks to transform a man into an officer specialized in the forced return of refused asylum-seekers. This film follows the recruits' first simulations and first escort on a scheduled flight. It takes on the outlook of young officers who are learning to do their duty and practise a “humane violence”, leaving doubts and emotions outside their uniforms.
