FESTIVAL DEI POPOLI 2008
posted by alberto on 2008–03–06
Luciano Barisone is the new director of the Festival dei Popoli. Born in Genoa in 1949, he is a journalist, film critic (Filmcritica, Cineforum, Duellanti, La Rivista del Cinematografo), proponent of Cineclub, and founder of the magazine Panoramiche, of which he is also director. Since 1997 he has collaborated with various international film festivals. He has edited critical studies of Catherine Breillat, Robert Guèdiguian, Clint Eastwood, Naomi Kawase, and Nicolas Philibert. In 2002 he created the Alba International Film Festival, where he was acting director until 2007. He has been an international jury member at Cannes (Camèra d’Or, 1997), Marseille (2000), Valladolid (2003), Buenos Aires (2004), Lisbon (2004), Belfort (2005), and Pamplona (2008). As new director, he will be taking over for Mario Simondi, who was the General Secretary since 1986 and has been a collaborator since the festival’s outset.
’’The Festival has always been a guiding beacon for me, so I welcome this new job with enthusiasm. In the seventies, when I was starting out in film criticism, I often had the chance to follow it closely. For me, it meant participating in one of the special forms of knowing the world and thinking about the human condition. I am pleased to take up this kind of challenge because in the film world the Festival dei Popoli is considered one of the great humanitarian patrimonies and we should pay tribute to its 48 year legacy by expanding and developing its activities. The Festival was founded on the content and language of film. Now that the documentary is held in high esteem, we should be talking about the cinematographic forms that have helped advance it. And we must not limit ourselves to thinking only about pre-existing films, but we should also be planning films for the future’’.

Serate di cinema documentario sulla discriminazione
22 maggio – 26 giugno 2007
dell’antidiscriminazione.

The Festival dei Popoli in New York
posted by alberto on 2008–04–30
From May 29th to the 31st, the Festival dei Popoli will set down in New York's splendid Snug Harbor, Staten Island, currently a vital center of activity in one of New York City's five boroughs.
The Festival dei Popoli's first annual New York event was developed by two associations with similar cultural platforms: the venerable "Snug Harbor Cultural Center", located in the Staten Island Botanical Garden, and the FitzGerald Foundation of Florence, a new association founded on the longstanding friendship between the city of Florence and Anglo-Saxon culture. It is also made possible by the support of the Regione Toscana and of Mediateca Regionale Toscana Film Commission.
The three day event is part of an ongoing movement by the Festival dei Popoli to circulate its rich collection of archival footage abroad. Since 1959, the collection has grown into an unparalleled treasury of documentary films and the history of documentary filmmaking.
"Cinema is a matter of exchanging looks: those of the people in the frame, those of the filmmaker framing them, and those of the spectator seeing through them. On the occasion of our first event on American soil, it seemed interesting to us, then, to focus in on the dynamic of exchanging viewpoints: on one end, the viewpoints of filmmakers who, over the years, have observed with curiosity and passion the peculiarities of Tuscan life; on another, those of filmmakers who have let their gaze fall on the complex and cosmopolitan life of New York; and yet another viewpoint is that of the people of Staten Island who can here discover the presence of a distant place and the memory of a place close by. The films were selected not only based on the material at hand in the archive, but also on the merits of creativity with respect to mere observation. Therefore, the films to be screened on Staten Island are auteur documentaries, the result of a reality as it is filtered through personal aesthetic. They consider environments, architectures, unusual people and quiet, everyday people, piecing together a mosaic that, seen through well-defined viewpoints, will bring to the public a more precise idea of different territories. Some of the documentaries show New York as it has been depicted in the festival's prizewinning films from the early years to today. Another group of films takes a look at places and events in Tuscany as they have been perceived and interpreted by filmmakers of international acclaim." (Luciano Barisone)

Visions of the scenarios to come
What are the key thoughts of reflection about tomorrow? Atlas of the Future offers us likely visual trajectories that project our day into forthcoming scenarios and patterns.
The exhibit is an annotation of moving images which address key themes in social development and in our world studied through video clips and documentaries, the latter hailing from the archives of Festival dei Popoli.
From Mexico to India, from the United States to Nigeria, from Israel to China, from Italy to the Congo to Russia, the works tell stories and utopias, imagine worlds and offer speculations for life in the future.

49° FESTIVAl dei popoli
14–21 novembre 2008
INTRODUCTION
Documentary film, the cinematographic representation of the real, is an art in flux. And the Festival dei Popoli would like to think hard about such a state of flux.
While not abandoning its anthropological roots, documentary film should open itself up to the world by exploring new cinematographic forms and not limit itself to strict rules. While adhering to recognizable tenets, it should investigate a plurality of cinematographic expression, expanding our idea of the state of things and adding new directions for documentaries. By widening our own scope, we hope to achieve a closer relationship with the current times, which, within a discussion of mis-en-scene, mixes fact and fiction, even while risking undermining its audience’s greatest securities.
While documentaries remain firmly planted in the material and spiritual life of men and women, the festival intends to explore: craft, language as it represents different subjects, and the artistic nuance of the person filming as much as the human and social nuance of the person being filmed. In this sense, the festival will straddle continuity and innovation, focusing its program on worldliness, innovation in craft and the production of a new cinema.
MISSION
The festival demonstrates an enthusiastic dialectical spirit, taking a fresh educational approach that goes beyond the International Competitions and rewards of the Main Programme, and eschews post-production debates for a week of bringing together filmmakers and producers to participate in roundtable discussions, workshops and general gatherings
The festival acts as a studio, a place in which we not only watch films and discuss world events, but also plan films to come. The project’s goal is to form a ’’Foundation’’ that will select high-quality creative projects to partially finance, offering residences, tutorials and meetings with producers for select filmmakers.
The Festival dei Popoli embarks on a promotional campaign locally (City, Province, Region), nationally (in other cities), and internationally (by collaborating with other festivals). That means collaborating with other local cultural groups, developing profitable relationships and fostering organized projects in the film world.
The festival works with other cities to host national documentary screenings, photography exhibits, music concerts and dining events. In exchange, Florence is often invited to other cities to screen Italian documentaries while also having the opportunity to promote the city, its culture, arts, and gastronomy.
In collaboration with other festivals, the Festival is working toward creating a digital streaming source for its documentaries; a collection of DVDs is being created to be distributed via internet or through a network of special libraries.
GENERAL OUTLINE
The project functions like a VCR player: the present (Play), past (Rewind), and the future (Fast-forward). Just so, the films in the International Competition and Main Programme mark present-day concerns; those in the Retrospective, Master, Young Filmmakers and Thematic Section deal with the past; the ’’Foundation’’ projects look to the future. They all hinge on the conference about the status of documentary film, the true genius loci of the Festival dei Popoli. The interpretation of documentary film as a tool for recording and bearing witness, as well as a form of personal expression, is the conference’s corollary. The festival is designed to be an organic and harmonious entity stretching out in all directions like a living organism.
PROGRAMME
The 49th annual Festival is currently being organized. For the moment, these are our categories. Adjustments and additions will be communicated as they arise, including film selections, jury members and honored guests.
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION:
14 features and 10-12 shorts, World Premiere films (alternatively European or Italian Premiere).
MAIN PROGRAMME:
10 contemporary films, Italian Premiere, that cover the range of documentary forms, from installation work to fiction.

A book with interviews and essays will be published in conjunction with the retrospective.

10 films by a filmmaker of international repute. A critical study with interviews and essays will be published, and a lecture and/or a roundtable discussion will be held in conjunction with the homage.
YOUNG FILMMAKERS IN FOCUS:

A Brief History of the Festival dei Popoli
Founded in 1959 by a group of humanities scholars, anthropologists, sociologists, ethnologists and experts in mass-media, the not for profit Festival dei Popoli has been working for almost fifty years to promote and study social documentary cinema. Chiefly, the association organizes one of the most important international documentary festivals in Italy. At the same time, the Festival dei Popoli is busy restoring and conserving its archives (including about 10,000 titles, from video to film reels) as well as organizing courses and workshops for aspiring directors and documentary filmmakers.
In past ceremonies, the Festival has screened the best documentary productions on an international level, and it has brought to the public's attention the most noteworthy cineastes in the genre (Jean Rouch, Ken Loach, Vittorio de Seta, Fred Wiseman, Richard Leacock, Gianfranco Mingozzi, Lindsay Anderson, Abbas Kiarostami, Nagisa Oshima, Ian Dunlop, Aleksandr Sokurov, Artavazd Pelechian, Jørgen Leth and many others). Conferences and roundtable discussions, considered an integral part of the ceremony, have allowed the Florentine public to meet leading figures of the social sciences: from anthropologists to sociologists, city-planners to linguists (Roland Barthes, Umberto Eco, Francesco Alberoni, Georges Balandier, Edgar Morin, M. Sahlins, Mary Douglas, Elemire Zolla, Giuseppe De Rita, Carlo Tullio Altan, Jean-Louis Comolli, Marc Augé). With an early interest – which has never been abandoned – in ethnographic documentaries, today the Festival's events touch upon the most diverse aspects of the contemporary world: topical social and political issues, history, theatre, music, contemporary art, history of cinema (worth remembering are the retrospectives about authors who tread the line between documentary and fiction, like Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, John Cassavetes, Ken Loach, Nagisa Oshima, Lindsay Anderson, Aleksandr Sokurov, Jørgen Leth).
Organized by themes, the Festival dei Popoli has confronted issues of architecture and the development of urban landscape, immigration, new cults, the relationship between western medical practices and traditional healing, water resources, and the role of family in the third millennium. Besides in-depth looks at certain subject matter, problems in cinematographic representation have been explored in a series of discussions about themes such as televised journalism, new European realism and the evolution of technique in European cinema. Among the most successful of these series have been: "How the West was Won and Honor Lost"; "Blacks in Movies and Films by Blacks"; "Birth of a Continent: Society and Cinema in Black Africa, 1960 -1981"; "Film and Reality"; "Images of Italian Colonialism"; "Madame l´eau: Water Stories" and "The Family of the Third Millenium".
The Festival dei Popoli is a member of EDN (European Documentary Network), RED (Réseau d'échange et d'expérimentation pour la diffusion du cinéma documentaire) and the Assembly of "Amis du Cinéma du Réel".
