Alive, alone, disbelieving existence. We began the journey. You have had to survive, again.” [G. Cioni] The story of Silvano Lippi told by the protagonist himself, a soldier in Greece in 1943, taken prisoner by the Germans, deported to Mauthausen, and then assigned to the gas chambers. The lm is about him, from the return. An endless return, forever unanswered.

Like in a ash forward, Geyrhalter shows us desert, abandoned, almost apocalyptic scenarios of non-places, symbol at once of man’s transience and imperma- nence and of his carelessness, disrespect for nature. Homo sapiens is a hymn to man’s ingenuity, a warning for his conscience, and an invitation to reflect on his role in the world.

The second chapter of the series Conversations de salon, this is another work filmed in Lebanon that proposes the same patterns as the previous one: in Beirut, the film-maker’s mother welcomes her friends every afternoon, and the women talk of their lives sitting on the sofa. Words flow, secrets surface, swinging between hope and despair. In Conversations de salon II, these women painstakingly describe what makes them happy: to travel, get a lifting, pray…

Margot is a migrant who came from one of the countries right on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea. She is 78 years old but still walks to work every day as laundry presser in the luxurious apartments of wealthy Parisians. Most of the time she doesn’t even meet them, but she absorbs their world like a little girl in a doll’s house.
