“To be young and not revolutionary is a contradiction even in biological terms.” The director of this film, her debut, uses the words of Salvador Allende to begin her story. On April 10, 2016, people vote in Peru to elect their new president: many, including the Milan community of Peruvians, are afraid that the daughter of dictator Alberto Fujimori is elected. The filmmaker approaches her community in order to observe this historic moment for her country.

Esino Lario is a small village in the Alps at the border of Italy and Switzerland. It is a quiet, isolated site; the only foreigners are a group of refugees sheltered in an old hotel, waiting for political asylum. In 2016, the village hosted an international event about the World Wide Web and digital culture, i.e. the annual gathering of Wikipedia volunteers. The film follows the preparations over the months prior to the event. While some get involved, others show indifference or open hostility, revealing a society that is split between modernity and tradition, openness and narrowmindedness.

DEATH IN THE TERMINAL

On October 18, 2015, a terrorist armed with a gun and a knife entered Beersheba’s bus terminal. Within 18 minutes, a soldier was killed and an Eritrean asylum seeker was lynched after being mistaken for the terrorist. This film presents a tense, minute-by-minute, Rashomon-style account of that tragic day. It tells the story of people caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Their testimonies are incorporated into security camera footage to present a surprising and complex picture that challenges on people’s ability to judge what is happening in times of collective panic.
