International documentary film festival

  • INTERNATIONAL FEATURE-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION

    A selection of fourteen documentaries, all Italian premieres. They will be judged by an International Jury made up of three members who will award the following prizes: Best Documentary Award (8,000 euro), Best Director Award (3,500 euro) and the “Targa Gian Paolo Paoli” for the Best Ethno-Anthropological Film. The films also compete for the Audience Award.

  • INTERNATIONAL SHORT DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION

    Italian premieres of fifteen short documentaries competing for the Best Short Documentary Award (2,500 euro), chosen by the International Jury, and for the Lorenzo de’ Medici Award (1,000 euro), chosen by the Students Jury.

  • PANORAMA

    The documentary genre is one of the glories of contemporary Italian cinema. The Festival presents seven feature-length documentaries which represent the best of the 2012 national production.

  • PANORAMA WORK IN PROGRESS

    Thanks to the collaboration with Documentaristi Anonimi-Associazione Documentaristi Toscani and Cinemaitaliano.info, the Festival presents three Italian documentaries that are still in production. This will be a special opportunity to have a closer look at the creative process and to learn about the behind the scenes of the work of a documentary filmmaker.

  • OUT OF COMPETITION

    Italian premieres of four documentaries, to learn more about some great figures in the fields of politics, arts and entertainment and to reflect upon current issues, such as the nuclear disaster in Japan.

  • FOCUS: CRITICAL MO(VE)MENT

    From Spain to Greece, a journey in the European squares to meet protesters, see their faces and hear their voices.

  • RELATED TO ME – BODY, MEMORY, IDENTITY

    Eight films selected on the basis of three keywords, to explore issues such as the description of the self through the other, self-portrait, the relationship between body and memory, the definition of one’s own identity beyond conventional classifications. This section integrates the exhibition “Francis Bacon and the Existential Condition in Contemporary Art”, organized by CCC Strozzina – Centre for Contemporary Culture at Palazzo Strozzi (until January the 27th 2013, Palazzo Strozzi, Florence).

  • EL DOCUMENTAL Y YO: THE CINEMA OF ANDRÉS DI TELLA

    A complete retrospective - for the first time in Italy - dedicated to Andrés Di Tella, one of the most representative filmmakers in contemporary Argentinean cinema. In his films, Di Tella shows us his deep knowledge of the history and culture of his own country. His works give the audience the possibility to explore “knowledge paths”: travels, encounters and stories create a narrative full of exciting and mysterious implications. The retrospective is organized in collaboration with the INCAA - Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales. The filmmaker will be in Florence to meet the audience and to hold a workshop dedicated to writing for documentaries.

  • TRIBUTE TO RAYMOND DEPARDON

    As special guests of the 53rd Festival dei Popoli, Raymond Depardon and Claudine Nougaret will be in Florence to present their last film: Journal de France. The tribute to Depardon presents a selection of his most significant works. The event is organized in collaboration with the French Embassy and with the French Institute of Florence.
