“FICTION/DOCUMENTARY – ARCHIVE/CONTEMPORARY – PAST/PRESENT – CINEMA ON THE FRONTIER OF GENRES AND EPOCHS”

Sharing his vast experience of working in both documentary and feature genres, his thorough knowledge of the specifics of creating films out of found footage and his keen interest in historical events and their impact on contemporary society, on the occasion of the tribute organized within the 60th Festival dei Popoli, Sergei Loznitsa will present a masterclass, which will be addressed both at cinema students and professionals, and at the cinema lovers. Sergei will use excerpts from his recent films to illustrate his lecture and will try to dwell on the major issues, dominating the Art of Cinema in 2019.

The following topics will be discussed:

• Youtube documentary video evidence from a war zone as an inspiration for a feature film (Donbass)

• Found footage – propaganda or historical document? (The Event, The Trial, State Funeral)

• Making or “re-making” history – using archive footage in a documentary/ fiction genre (Babi Yar)

The masterclass will be held in English and it will take place on November 8th from 10am to 1pm, at Cinema La Compagnia.
