Il Fare Politica – Cronache Della Toscana Rossa
Director: Hugues Le Paige | produced by the Dardenne brothers
Belgium, France, 2005, 86'
For over two decades since 1982, Hugues Le Paige has periodically met and filmed four militants of the Italian Communist Party section in the Tuscan town of Mercatale, describing the individual political paths within the broader context of the party and of Italian society. Carlo Giuntini, Vincenzo Bartoli, Claudio Bagnolesi, and Fabiana Falciani are four passionate militants whose commitment in politics is faced with little and big events of national history and beyond: Berlinguer’s death in 1984, the collapse of the Berlin wall in 1989, the dissolution of the Italian Communist Party in 1991 and subsequent transformation into the Democratic Party of the Left, and the victory of Berlusconi-led Polo delle Libertà at the 1994 general elections. When the PCI dissolves, the four friends take different paths: Carlo and Vincenzo continue to serve in the new party; Claudio joins Rifondazione Comunista; Fabiana remains active in community life by way of her commitment in associations. The story of a crucial two decades for the Italian left in a film produced by the Dardenne brothers, in which talking politics means taking a stance, fighting, for oneself and for others.
