One In A Million

Germany, 2022, 84'

The documentary offers a glimpse into the world of teenagers today through the eyes of Whitney, a very young gymnast with many followers on social media, and Yara, a great admirer of hers who is responsible for one of the influencer’s main fanpages. The director makes a poetic and intimate portrait of the journey of growth of the two heroines, who experience the early teenage challenges through of social media. The stories of Whitney and Yara intersect in the virtual world and then continue in opposite directions: the former has to cope with the pressure and vulnerability of media exposure, growing loneliness, and the desire of intimacy and friendship; the latter is focused on overcoming her shyness and social isolation thanks to new friendships, first loves, and important decisions to build her future. The film is like a diaphragm in which the protagonists get closer and farther, influencing each other, but never really encountering. By way of the stories of Whitney and Yara the filmmaker depicts what it’s like to be a teenager today, the age in which relationships are made of the precarious balance of closeness and distance, connection and solitude, real and virtual.

The event is finished.
