Our Century

U.R.S.S., 1983, 30’

An extraordinary visual and acoustic symphony, an assortment of archival material that alternates between the dream of Soviet space travel and aerial disasters of the 20th Century. A reflection on the idea of flight and at the same time the subtle yet tragic finality that is the fragility of human existence.

The event is finished.

Artavazd Pelesjan

Artavazd Pelešjan was born in 1938 in north-eastern Armenia, almost on the border with Turkey. Armenia was a Soviet Republic at its birth, and the director's personal story is linked to the historical events of the USSR. In 1963 he enrolled in the directing course of VGIK in Moscow. Until the 1980s his cinema remained completely unknown, but in the 1980s, a weak circulation of Soviet works allowed the first screenings of his films and participation in festivals such as the Rotterdam, Paris, Nyon and Marseille Festivals, finally receiving the due recognition from critics, who recognised him as one of the greatest living filmmakers.
