THE ILLUSION OF THE PRESENT – HOMAGE TO SERGEI LOZNITSA
On its 60th edition, Festival dei Popoli pays tribute to Sergei Loznitsa, one of the most rigorous and authoritative contemporary European film directors. Loznitsa was selected and awarded at major film festivals worldwide and was invited to take part in educational programmes by the most prestigious cultural institutions. Our programme is made of five documentaries and a feature film, thus proposing an across-the-board outlook on his style and work method. From archival films to feature films, but also observational documentaries, Loznitsa‘s filmography counts 25 titles made over 25 years of activity. We chose to focus on the crucial role time plays in his cinema, underlying the mathematical, musical quality that structures the images in his films as well as the questioning of categories such as history and memory within the film device that combines perception, emotion, and thinking. To complete the programme, Loznitsa will hold a masterclass on Friday November 8th.
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
With our gaze vertiginously looking backwards, we are going back over the sixty years of Festival dei Popoli to rediscover a constellation of precious stones, gems that deserve to be brought back to light. The results of the dazzling talent of internationally renowned film directors presented over these sixty years, the 20 titles that make up this section are authentic “moments of great cinema” now reunited on the occasion of the 60th anniversary to compose an invaluable jewel. A unique opportunity to watch, or rewatch, films that have foreshadowed the cinema of the future, and still do.
DOC AT WORK - LABORATORY OF IDEAS RESERVED FOR AUDIENCE AND PROFESSIONALS
Doc at Work presents meetings with directors to investigate some issues concerning the documentary cinema today and points of view and styles of the authors.
DOC AT WORK – CAMPUS
Doc at Work is focused on the work done by Italian film schools, in the belief that their activity plays a strategic role as regards not only training, but also the entire audio-visual sector. We believe film schools are like outposts that offer a vantage point on the work done by young talents as well as training grounds in which the new generations of cineastes are allowed to experiment. Therefore, we selected some of the films made in 2019 by students of the CSC - Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (Palermo), Zelig - School for Documentary, Television and New Media (Bolzano), Civica scuola di cinema "Luchino Visconti” (Milan), Scuola Holden - Storytelling e Performing Arts (Turin). Moreover, this edition will have as Special Guest the HEAD – Genève, Haute école d'art et de design (Switzerland) presenting a selection of films made by their students.
POPOLI FOR KIDS!
This section, realized in collaboration with the Greek festival KinderDocs, proposes a selection of documentaries for young and very young audiences, but suitable for teachers and parents too. Every film tells a story about the life of children and adolescents dealing with friendship, family, education, creativity, art, music, migration, or the environment, but is also a chance to enter the colourful world of children and girls and boys. Sunday, November 3, a whole day of screenings and workshops will take place at the Cinema Stensen, under the aegis of WWF Italia - Onlus.
Human beings, the only living creatures who can actually destroy what allows them to exist, are also the only ones who have to power to re-establish the order of risks and priorities for action on our planet. If our habitat is in danger, we are too. We should expect unusual political directions, life opportunities, and technological possibilities; without these, the world’s destiny is sealed. A single vision encompassing past, present, and future – capable of envisaging a technological solution that is also a cure – is what the 11 titles of this section intend to propose.
This section explores and presents the new forms of the documentary, opening into new technologies, alternative and hybrid storytelling, and a diversity that enriches. Over the past few years, Virtual and Augmented Reality have become new ways for humankind to approach the world. DocExplorer welcomes VR and AR technologies, asking a few crucial questions: what is the challenge they pose to the world of documentary film-making? And, more generally, to humankind in its relationship with the real?
