“The Documentary Month” 2019-2020 – Cinema La Compagnia – Thursday, January 16, 9:00 p.m.

THE CAVE by Feras Fayyad (Syria, Denmark, Germany, USA, Qatar, 2019, 95′) original version with Italian subtitles. FILM NOMINATED TO THE ACADEMY AWARD 2020.

Director Feras Fayyad returns to his home country to follow a team of doctors who tirelessly treat the victims in an underground hospital while fighting systemic sexism. The documentary takes the viewer into an underground landscape similar to the post-apocalyptic world of Interceptor (1979), a network of secret tunnels under Ghouta, near Damascus.

Shot over the last two years in extremely difficult conditions, The Cave offers an extraordinarily powerful point of view on the dramatic events in Syria that are also at the root of contemporary migration phenomena.

The film was presented at the Toronto Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, at the British Film Institute London Film Festival, at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam, at the Festival dei Popoli, and is in the running for the Oscar 2020 nomination.

Now in its sixth edition, “The Documentary Month” is one of the most representative events dedicated to the spread of the cinema of reality in Italy. A “widespread festival” that offers the best of Italian and international documentary production in Rome and in a territorial network that involves major Italian cities. The festival will also be held in Florence, and will be at La Compagnia between December and January 2020.
