The poster for the 67th Festival dei Popoli
A woman director with a camera in her hand, dressed in work clothes, with the Brookside mine in Kentucky behind her. This is a very young Barbara Kopple on the set of Harlan County, U.S.A., the documentary that won her her first Oscar in 1976—the image chosen for the poster of the 67th Festival dei Popoli.
Fifty years after that photo was taken, the photograph comes back to life in colour, becoming the symbol of a cinema that immerses itself in reality and tells its story from the inside.
Barbara Kopple will be a guest at the Festival dei Popoli on 3 and 4 November, with a trilogy dedicated to the struggles and rights of working men and women.
The first woman director to win two Oscars for Best Documentary and the first one to receive this award for a feature film, Barbara Kopple will be in attendance to engage and meet with the audience. She will present not only her two Oscar-winning documentaries, Harlan County, U.S.A. (1976) and American Dream (1991), but also her latest work, Union Town, which premiered this year at the Venice Film Festival. From the historic miners’ strike at the Brookside Mine in southeastern Kentucky, to the Hormel strike in Austin, Minnesota, between 1985 and 1986, Barbara Kopple continues to demonstrate her ability to provide an intimate look at exploitation and labour demands, standing alongside food-delivery riders and logistics drivers in New York in recent years.
The 67th Festival dei Popoli is made possible thanks to the support of Creative Europe MEDIA, MiC - Direzione Generale Cinema e Audiovisivo, Regione Toscana, Comune di Firenze, Fondazione CR Firenze, Fondazione Sistema Toscana - 50 Giorni di Cinema a Firenze, Calliope Arts, Publiacqua, under the patronage of the City of Florence.
