DANCING ON THE EDGE OF A VOLCANO

Germany, Lebanon | 2023 | 87 min

On August 4, 2020, Mounia Akl is about to begin principal photography for her debut feature Costa Brava, that was to premiere one year later at the Venice Film Festival, when a huge explosion in the Beirut harbour annihilates the city and the life of its population. Against all odds, she decides to carry on with her project, facing the unbelievable difficulties entailed by the paralysis of a country after the disaster and by Covid-related complications. Cyril Aris has filmed the backstage, recording the passion and determination of a filmmaker and her crew who tackled misadventures on a daily basis. The making-of is accompanied by the portrayal of an angry country and a reflection on the necessity of the creative process in spite of everything. A political film with several narrative strands that pays homage to a vexed Beirut with nostalgic, touching tones. (s.c.)
