DAUGHTER OF GENGHIS
Denmark, Sweden, France, Mongolia | 2023 | 86 min | col./bw
33-year-old Gerel Byamba is an ardent nationalist, a shaman, a violent ringleader, and an indignant, hooded avenger. She fights for women’s equality in her country while leading an all-female, ultra-nationalist organisation devoted to protecting Mongolia from sex work and miscegenation. The result of a long-lasting photo-journalistic investigation on the phenomenon of neo-Nazi gangs in Mongolia, conducted by the film directors with cowriter Knud Brix, Daughter of Genghis unravels along seven years outlining the unusual and contradictory cross section of an underground world and a people that vowed to protect their identity at all costs in a territory overpowered by two giants, China and Russia. But the film is basically a portrait of a fierce and combative woman with the cracks of doubt that appear in her solid armour. (a.s.)
