In 2014, Daesh attacked the Sinjar province in southern Kurdistan, an area populated by Yazidi. During the occupation, many young women were kidnapped, forced to convert to Islam, and used as sex slaves. Today many of them have regained their freedom and come back to their homes. They try to reconstruct their lives, but the burden of the terrible experience as prisoners is still affecting their existence. A stage actor, “Uncle Hussein,” is trying to help the young women overcome their traumas. Kurd-Dutch filmmaker Reber Dosky reopens a window on the Yazidi extermination, a forgotten war crime of our times, with a sensitive approach to the trauma of the survivors, by way of a deeply humanist film. In Daughters Of The Sun, theatre and life meet, creating a collective path for the young protagonists to rediscover love and mutual support, to imagine a new possible future. (a.d.)
