GRANDMAMAUNTSISTERCAT
Netherlands, Poland | 2023 | 2023 | 24 min | col.
During the period of communist rule in Poland, the Łódź Educational Film Studio produced a huge quantity of propaganda films, tools of social reproduction that embraced the feminine canon too, such as gestures, look, and life choices. Zuza Banasinska appropriates this footage and reworks, re-signifies, and overturns it: the key to accomplish this operation is Baba Jaga, the evil witch of Slavic mythology, that here becomes the matrix of a female genealogy of the resistance. A little girl guides us to the discovery of this matrilinear progeny who lives in the same space as the film, a family composed of all the mothers, aunts, grandmothers, sisters, and animal presences that dwell in the images of hegemony, sabotaging them from within. Grandmamauntsistercat alters archive footage to deviate it from its disciplining destination and transform it into a tool to subvert the imaginary and to liberate at once the past and the future.
