LA RICOMPARSA DELLE LUCCIOLE

It is a magical debut the one made by Cristiano Giamporcaro, a young director who has just graduated from the Palermo Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. The dry landscape of the Sicilian hinterland, dramatically punctuated with ghostlike buildings, welcomes ten-year-old Giorgio and an elderly shepherd whose daily life unravels between the slopes of hills which silent roads snake through. Giorgio wanders throughout the landscape and its ruins engaging with it in a coarse close combat through innocent acts of destruction. At the same time, he learns to deal with the world that surrounds him – a very ancient one, as ancient as the sky above, made of distant stars whose light still shines. A film on the permanence of an impalpable reality that is alien to us, on the necessity of renewing our bonds with it, learning to go through its mysterious matter and its changes, each time finding new connections so that no disappearance can ever deplete its luminous base.
