LAS NOVIAS DEL SUR

Spain | 2024 | 41 min | col.| Spanish

In a southern village, women’s voices can be heard in their sweet, deep tones, almost like an underground river breaking a years-long silence. Las Novias del Sur offers an ironic yet sensitive journey through ghosts, sighs, and hidden desires, navigating uncelebrated weddings and silenced bodies. Time bends; it is not linear. It is repetition, absence, like an echo becoming tangible. With her feminist and courageous perspective, Elena López Riera traverses generational silence, turning it into an intimate and secular liturgy. At the heart of the film beats a heartrending quest which can never be fully grasped: the search for the ever-fleeting image of the mother and of herself, reflected in the former and multiplied. Marriage, motherhood, and sexuality become narrative devices to be questioned and re-signified. They are illuminated by deep irony, making the storytelling both gentle and powerful. This film celebrates the courage of speaking up and choosing what to pass on, returning the freedom of their voices to women. (L.F.)
