When Ukrainian film director Kira Muratova shared her belief that films made by women are characterized by a particular harshness in both topic and form, the German filmmaker Isa Willinger began to ponder about this. She then decided to start a dialogue with her peers on this theme, and make a film about it. The adjective “female” is conventionally associated with “empathic” and “sensitive;” what if women’s cinema were actually cruder and more explicit than films directed by men? Discussing works filmed in different periods to track the evolution of the cinema-power relationship, the debate involved a collective reflection resulting from a many-voiced intergenerational dialogue, featuring Ana Lily Amirpour, Catherine Breillat, Jackie Buet, Margit Czenki, Virginie Despentes, Alice Diop, Valie Export, Nina Menkes, Marzieh Meshkini, Mouly Surya, Céline Sciamma, Joey Soloway, Monika Treut, and Apolline Traoré.
