PERCEBES
Portugal, France| 2024 | 12 min | col.
Algarve, one of the southernmost regions of Portugal, is home to precious crustaceans called “percebes.” Provided with large claws, like those of prehistoric creatures, these weird animals live symbiotically with the rocks on the coast which bear the brunt of the Atlantic Ocean’s waves. Just like percebes, the inhabitants of the region fiercely resist the ocean tides and remain anchored to their land, the object of invasions for centuries and now prey to a growingly invasive tourism. A sophisticated animation film that presents the landscapes, colours, shapes and sounds of a lively sea town, Percebes – which means ‘to understand’ in Portuguese – conveys an important message: to understand the culture of a place you need to get to know it in depth, including experiencing its less obvious, more secret aspects.
