THE FLATS

Ireland, France, Belgium, Great Britain | 2024 | 114 min | col.

Belfast, New Lodge. An apartment in a Catholic and working-class neighbourhood. Joe remembers the traumas he experienced in his youth during the 1980’s, marked by the Northern Ireland conflict. Also Jolene, Sean, Angie, women and men equally marked forever, share the collective process of revisiting the stories of violence that shaped their lives. Little more than a decade from The Bookseller of Belfast, Alessandra Celesia returns to Northern Ireland to make a film that reworks and reenacts the traumas of a community marked by The Troubles. Like a collective séance of psychotherapy, The Flats is a film that listens and stays close to the bodies of its characters, shaping an autonomous temporal dimension in which present and past coexist through reenactment, the use of archive footage and, above all, foregrounding an urban space whose visible and invisible borders are exposed by the director.
