THE LONG ROAD TO THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR

Norway| 2025 | 70 min | bw. | English

Who gets to sit in the film director’s chair? In 1973, Vibeke Løkkeberg attended the First International Women’s Film Seminar in Berlin presenting her film Abort (1971). She filmed discussions, interviews, and moments of dialogue on how difficult it was to be women in the world of filmmaking, amid inequalities, marginalization, and sexism. The unedited footage remained buried in Norwegian archives for fifty years until recently, when the film stock and sound tracks were found. The resulting work is a powerful and necessary fresco: a historic document and a political manifesto. Not only has the director reconstructed an interrupted project, she has also transformed it into an act of resistance, a thread connecting past and present to remind us that the fight for a free and equal gaze is still an open battleground.
