A RECONNAISANCE

Denmark | 2025 | 29 min | col. | English, Maltese

The Heron 1 drone, produced by the Israeli firm IAI, is used by the European agency Frontex to patrol the Mediterranean. Pursuing his research into imaging and control technologies, Stefan Kruse has devoted a film-essay to this device, investigating the material side of surveillance policies at the European borders. His quest takes him from his desktop computer to the airport of Malta – the headquarter of the drone’s operational base as well as a group of aircraft spotters. It is an area on the margins, located between a mining past and a present dominated by a dematerialized economy, where the tension between the physical dimension of military control devices and their de facto invisibility behind a barrier of red tape takes shape. Positioning itself at the grey intersection between private companies and army agencies, civil technology and surveillance devices, A Reconnaissance reveals the concrete and anonymous face of a power whose strength lies in its intangibility.
