ANGRY SPIRITS

Germany | 2024 | 94 min | col.

Ainur is a young woman who used to live as a nomad in the steppe of Mongolia. She now dwells in the modern capital, Ulaanbaatar. To make a living for her family, she works as a dancer in a strip club. The woman is tormented by nightmares, so she decides to visit a shaman to dispel the evil spirits that must have taken hold of her. Thus begins a journey bound for her native land, the Gobi desert, where Ainur tries to regain her inner peace. Angry Spirits is a peculiar, rigorous film that creates a narrative and visual universe without forgetting the ethno-anthropological component. On her debut feature, filmmaker and anthropologist Iris Pakulla, who has studied the culture of Mongolia, connects shamanic rituals with the twisted landscapes resulting from mine exploitation and climate change.
