BARKING IN THE DARK
France | 2025 | 40 min | col. | French, English
Back in 1974, Residents shook up the world of music. No one knew their faces or identities: they would wear tuxedos and top hats, cover their heads with gigantic eye bulbs, or don equally frightening attire. They were the pioneers of faceless rock artists, even before Daft Punk (although their elusive, experimental music could arguably be defined as ‘rock’). Marie Losier was simply bound to meet Residents. Avoiding orthodox biography, which would have been totally out of place, the film director portrays the freaks of San Francisco through the only possible approach, i.e., a crazy, oblique, and original one. Exploring the places where they are used to creating, and talking to the only known face associated with the band - the ‘manager,’ Homer Flynn - Barking in the Dark rummages through fandom letters and other juicy oddities, thus inviting the audience, albeit philosophically, to free their inner madness and embrace their ‘freakness’ regardless of their age.
