After working as a vine grower in France for three years, Ivan returns for the first time to his homeland, the Sulcis in Sardinia, historically a coal mining site plagued by recurring industrial crises. At home, the young man helps his parents, who are now ready for retirement, run their small business, while at same time he reconnects with the faces, silences, and complexities of a land he had left behind. Cumpartia recounts the conflict between past and present in a young man torn between his roots and his desire for a future: what is the cost of starting all over again in your own country while all your peers have decided to leave? Daniele Gaglianone’s intimate, sorrowful film is set in a crepuscular Sardinia, dealing with themes such as homecoming, the fragility of family bonds, and identity. The story of a simple family of winemakers serves as a metaphor for a resistant, quiet human condition. (A.D.)
