D IS FOR DISTANCE

Film directors Christopher Petit and Emma Matthews tell the story of their son Louis, who developed a rare form of epilepsy that caused him to lose his childhood memories. The film presents a mix of home movies, drawings made by Louis himself, archive footage, and the suggestions of extreme experimental imagery. Constructed like a journey, both real and mental, it shows father and son moving across concrete landscapes and inner territories. The parents’ dismay at the almost impenetrable universe inhabited by Louis is assuaged only by their bond of love. Through a layered, suggestive editing, D Is for Distance is a meditation on the power of images to preserve what biological memory cannot retain. (T.P.)
