DIRTY CARE

Austria | 2024 | 17 min | col. | German

‘Handbook of instructions against patriarchal violence:’ this could be the title of the irreverent short film by Austrian visual artist Isa Schieche. With a prevalence of point-of-view shots, the film alternates hypothetical scenes of violence with moments of training using an aesthetic that is reminiscent of video games. Irony and intimacy are interwoven, transforming trauma into a breeding ground of resistance and imagination. The message is straightforward: “an oppressed body always has the possibility of violent resistance.” The short does not – as is often the case – merely represent the vulnerability engendered by violence, but explores the possibility of an impure and ironic reaction resulting from the reversal of the rules of the game.
