Akosua, the queer Ghanaian-German protagonist, recounts the three years she spent between Germany and Ghana with her friend Mala Reinhardt, a film director. The primary focus of this film is this bond, which serves as a lens through which to observe desires, bodies, and transformations. While Akosua is trying to fulfil her dream of having children within a polyamorous relationship, Mala becomes pregnant during the production of this film, which changes direction according to the news, bending and opening up. The film is less a story than a conversation, which becomes like a body, a shared diary in which the roles of the watcher and the watched become intertwined. The film’s gaze is both political and emotional, taking care of the forms of cohabitation and the gestures of solidarity that exist on the margins. Reinhardt’s shots are filled with tenderness and rigour, making up a film that is a gesture of caring and a reflection on setting up house, family, and freedom. (T.P.)
