IL SETTIMO PRESIDENTE

Italy | 2025 | 95 min | col. | Italian

“There cannot be true freedom without social justice, just as there cannot be true social justice without freedom.” Thirty-five years after the passing of one of the most beloved Presidents of the Italian Republic, here is a thorough and affectionate portrait of Sandro Pertini, from his early days as a socialist and partisan to his presidency. During the so-called “years of lead,” he showed an extraordinary ability to represent the deepest sentiments of an entire people. Dario Ceccarini and Mario Molinari’s documentary traces the human and political journey of a unique figure in the history of the Republic: without ever forgetting the outcasts and the helpless, Sandro Pertini played his role with courage, integrity, and passion. He embodied the highest ideals of freedom and anti-fascism, becoming a point of reference for whole generations. Several figures pay homage to him and share memories of him in the film (which features music by Nicola Piovani and drawings by Gianluigi Toccafondo), including Fausto Bertinotti, Emma Bonino, Luciana Castellina, Furio Colombo, and Walter Veltroni.
