LIMITS OF EUROPE

Hranice Evropy

Czech Republic, France, Slovakia| 2024 | 98 min | col.

Czech journalist Saša Uhlová leaves temporarily her country to conduct an investigation into the lives of the women who migrate to West Europe to find a job. To this end, she managed to be hired under cover in Germany, France, and the UK to execute several underpaid tasks. Thus she finds out a stark inequality in work conditions across the European continent, a sort of iron curtain applied to salaries. Limits of Europe recounts a brave investigation into the labour market in Europe in which the body who films is at stake. Film director Apolena Rychlíková, who hid a micro-camera in the journalist’s eyeglasses, made an exposé – as well as an important formal reflection – that, by way of a ‘spy-gaze,’ blows the whistle on the control exerted in the exploitation of labour.
