MANODOPERA (Screening for schools)

Interdit aux chiens et aux italiens

France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal| 2022 | 70 min | col.

A film animated in stop motion, No Dogs or Italians Allowed is a deeply emotional journey through the story of a family of Italian immigrants who left their village in the north-west agricultural region in the early 20th century and moved to France in search of a better life. Film director Alain Ughetto took inspiration from the story of his own family: “We all have memories of our father, our mother, a little less of our grandparents, but not much more – the rest is history. My idea was to go back in time intertwining my family’s private memories with historical remembrance.” (A.U.) The film explores the immigrants’ hardships and hopes from the point of view of the young main character. The narrative goes back on vivid memories handed down in the family’s stories, which tell the work experiences, the sacrifices, and the construction of a new identity, always accompanied by the nostalgia for their homeland. The carefully crafted details and warm hues of the animation contribute to an intimate atmosphere that draws the audience deep into the narration. (s.b.)
