In this unusual coming-of-age story, the director is looking for a substitute for the father figure, whom he lost during childhood. He finds it on… Google. Classic teenage rites of passage – shaving for the first time; painting and DIYing; using a condom – find a loving and tireless guidance on the Internet and its myriad responses. As the years go by, the questions change, as does the need for a model, but technological development is up to the challenge, thanks to the endless capacities of artificial intelligence. An ‘algorithm father’ may not be ideal, but it’s at least a starting point. (C.C.)

Paul Kermarec is a Paris-based artist currently in his final year at the Ecole nationale supérieure d'art de Paris Cergy. His work explores the themes of coming of age, transmission and identity. His cinematic approach for his first short film, No God No Father, was to combine digital archives, screen recordings and intimate storytelling.
