PEACHES GOES BANANAS

France, Belgium | 2024 | 73 min | col. | English

Anyone who experienced those special years of the Canadian scene in the early third millennium will remember the impact that Peaches had on pop-rock and the arts in general. However, the approach that Marie Losier chose to describe the brilliant performer is so unusual and unexpected that it instantly outperforms the many ‘classic’ documentaries already made about her. Amid costume changes and phone calls to her partner, time spent with her disabled sister and anecdotes of and about her parents, Peaches Goes Bananas unveils the intimate and personal dimension of an artist whose transgressive exuberance on stage has taken over all other aspects of her life. Discovering Peaches as an animator for children or a compassionate sister creates a novel empathy, deepened by her reflections on the melancholy of old age. This renders that which was once dangerous and irritating awkward and inappropriate, but Peaches, uncompromising in her identity, refuses to acquiesce. (E.S.)
