An investigation, possibly a reportage – this is what one could think of at first sight. The topic is the condition of women workers in large companies in Vietnam. The country discloses one of the secrets to its growth: an idea of work inspired by productivity at all costs. However, the film reveals itself to be a many-sided story, made up of women’s voices talking about their experiences and painting a picture of hierarchical and authoritarian structures, of subjects whose lives are strongly limited by working conditions, of people who emigrate from the countryside to work in cities. There’s another level too in the film when it stages work situations that expose the military logic governing work relationships. Sitting around a work desk, some women discuss their working conditions with their department’s forewoman. This way, an abstract quality reminiscent of theatre is inserted in the film, revealing the distorted form that work can take in our present. (D.D.)
