Doc at Work Industry 65th Festival dei Popoli’ programme

On the occasion of the 65th edition of the Festival dei Popoli, from 6 to 8 November 2024, the appointment with Doc at Work Industry is renewed, the space dedicated to the cinema of the real work-in-progress that welcomes projects by Italian authors or authors of Italian production, in development and production, with the aim of making them known to international professionals, to create new synergies and promote their diffusion.

  • Matchmaking Italy-Switzerland (10:00- 11:00, MAD - Murate Art District): Italy-Switzerland matchmaking session (open to all Industry accredited, public only), in collaboration with Swiss Films, CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Toscana and CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Firenze.
  • Convention Tax Credit (11:30-13:00, MAD - Murate Art District): Convention on Tax Credit, organised by  Banca Etica, CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Toscana e CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Firenze. (Open to all accredited Industry)
  • Meet the Festivals (16:00-18:00, MAD - Murate Art District): Meeting with representatives of some of the main European festivals dedicated to documentary cinema. An opportunity to discover the logic and criteria of the festivals and the opportunities offered at industry level. (Open to all accredited Industry)
  • Italian Documentary: towards fiction? (18:30-20:00, Cinema La Compagnia): Panel on the Italian cinema of reality and the transition process from documentary to fiction, with the participation of Pietro Marcello, Alice Rohrwacher, Gabriele Genuino (Rai Cinema) and representatives of the national Film Commissions.   • Networking Cocktail (20:00 - 21:00): Organised by  Swiss Films, CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Toscana e CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Firenze. (Open to all accredited Industry

Switzerland, guest of honour of the 2024 edition of Doc at Work, is at the centre of a collaboration that aims to strengthen ties between the Swiss and Italian industries, precisely in the year in which Switzerland will host the EFA - European Film Awards ceremony.

In collaboration with Swiss Films, the Festival dei Popoli programme includes a selection of Swiss documentary films, while a delegation of Swiss producers will be present in Florence to meet Italian professionals. On 6 November, the Swiss delegation will take part in a meeting with Tuscan producers, selected in collaboration with CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Toscana and CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Firenze , with the aim of creating new co-production opportunities between Italy and Switzerland and enhancing the potential of exchange and networking.

Also on 6 November, a conference devoted to the new convention on tax credit will be held, with the participation of  Banca Etica, CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Toscana and CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Firenze,  to examine the new features and opportunities offered to Italian and European producers.

The programme also includes Meet the Festivals, a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about the selection criteria and operating logics of European festivals dedicated to documentary cinema.

The event will culminate with the 6.30 pm panel at Cinema La Compagnia, Italian Documentary: Towards Fiction?, which will explore the Italian cinema of reality and the transition from documentary to fiction by an entire generation of filmmakers who have contributed to renewing Italian cinematography over the last two decades. The dialogue will feature Pietro Marcello and Alice Rohrwacher, together with Gabriele Genuino of Rai Cinema. Scholar Alma Mileto will moderate the meeting.

Proxima is an event dedicated to Italian-produced or directed films in editing or post-production. Six works, made by emerging directors, represent the diversity of languages of the cinema of reality and its strong international potential. Excerpts from these works will be previewed during the meeting to an audience of film industry experts. The session will be moderated by Alice Burgin, Head of Industry at Visions du Réel.

Itineranze Doc is a 6-month training course dedicated to cinema projects in development. The programme envisages six intensive workshops dedicated to specific aspects of film development that will take place during the days of the organising festivals ( (Bellaria Film Festival, IsReal Festival, Sole Luna Doc Film Festival, PerSo – Perugia Social Film Festival, FrontDoc – Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Frontiera, Festival dei Popoli). These projects, from emerging Italian or in-country filmmakers, are looking for producers and other partners to complete and distribute their debut works. The pitch will be moderated by Zeynep Güzel, Head of Doc Station at Berlinale Talents.

Omar Rashid will present a preview of his upcoming documentary, ‘Generazione Fumetto’, together with producer Alessandro Tiberio (Valmyn). The film explores the contemporary Italian comics scene through the voices of seven established Italian cartoonists: Michele Rech (Zerocalcare), Giacomo Keison Bevilacqua, Micheal Rocchetti (Gli Scarabocchi di Maicol e Mirco), Sio (Simone Albrigi), Mirka Andolfo, Sara Pichelli and Rita Petruccioli.
